NOTE: Positions are open ONLY to Guyanese or CARICOM nationals.
Basic Requirements for ALL Offshore roles:
- OPITO Offshore certification
- Seaman’s Discharge Book (preferred)
- STCW and other offshore certifications
- Vaccination Book (COVID + Yellow Fever)
- ID card
- Passport
- Undergo a Drug & Alcohol screening and full medical for TB, OGUK and ENG1
The primary responsibilities of an Able Seaman include but are not limited to:
- Performing watch duties, including looking out for navigational hazards and monitoring the ship’s position at sea.
- Handling deck operations such as mooring and anchoring, ensuring all activities are carried out safely and efficiently.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and general upkeep of the deck, including painting, sweeping, and washing.
- Assisting with the loading and unloading of cargo, equipment, and supplies, adhering to set protocols to safeguard against damage.
- Participating in emergency drills and responding to emergencies, including man-overboard operations, fire fighting, and first aid.
- Utilizing deck machinery and equipment, as well as performing routine checks to ensure they are in sound working condition.
Tasks and Duties
To adequately fulfill their role, an Able Seaman must be proficient in a diverse array of tasks and duties that encompass navigational assistance, safety operations, and general maintenance. These include:
- Operating the ship's boats during launching and recovery procedures under the supervision of the officer in charge.
- Splicing wire or fiber rope and repairing canvas and other materials as needed.
- Guiding and instructing less experienced crew in daily ship operations.
- Ensuring compliance with environmental pollution laws pertaining to the disposal of garbage and other waste at sea.
- Maintaining the ship's log and other records, noting important occurrences during the watch.
Education and Certification Requirements
Candidates aspiring to become an Able Seaman must meet specific educational and certification requirements:
- Minimum completion of high school or equivalent education.
- Basic Safety Training Certification in accordance with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
- A valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) as an Able Seaman issued by a recognized maritime authority.
- Experience in maritime operations, typically evidenced by recorded sea time that qualifies for the credential.
- Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats operations, other than fast rescue boats, demonstrated by appropriate certification.
